This year, The Knight honours Sally Beard and the not-for-profit Backpacks 4 VIC Kids, of which Sally is the founder, as our 2020 Australian Knight.
In Australia, nearly 48,000 children are in foster care or emergency accommodation on any given night, with 11,500 new placements occurring each year.
Often vulnerable children are placed quickly, without much more than what they are wearing at the time. This can result in these kids feeling disorientated and vulnerable, without anything to call their own.
Operating solely on donations sought through fundraising, grants and sponsorship, Backpacks 4 VIC Kids’ mission is to provide these children with a pack of essential items such as toiletries, clothing, sleepwear and a toy or activity to help with the transition.
So far Backpacks 4 VIC Kids has assisted 6,500 children and their carers across Victoria. The estimated cost of a ‘My Essentials’ Pack is $50 but can save an agency or carer approximately $300, while providing priceless support and comfort to the child being placed into care.
The Knight has donated $10,000 to support the selfless and generous work that Sally performs for our children in need.
What is our Australian Knight Award?
Every Australia Day, staff at The Knight recognise a worthy recipient for our Australian Knight award; someone who has demonstrated qualities that personify those of a Knight, including bravery, selflessness and leadership.
The Knight donates $10,000 to the winner’s charity, or the charity of their choice.
