The Knight is certified carbon neutral with Climate Active

The Knight is officially carbon neutral, becoming Australia’s first Climate Active certified Owners Corporation Management Company.

Climate Active is Australia’s initiative for climate action, uniting people, business and Government to amplify our positive impact.

Certification is awarded to businesses that have achieved a state of net zero emissions, otherwise known as carbon neutrality, and is the most rigorous and credible certification available.

Climate Active certification helps the community take action by making it easier to identify and choose brands that are making a real difference.

The Knight worked with the team at Pangolin Associates to undertake a significant investigation, covering all aspects of our business operations, to reveal our carbon footprint.

This process helped identify some easy improvements, such as switching to recycled paper in our offices and using Powershop to switch to renewable energy in our Malvern location. For the emissions we could not reduce, we purchased offset credits.

Offset credits are invested in projects that reduce or remove emissions from the atmosphere, resulting in a net zero or ‘neutral’ position.

The Knight is proud to share that we have purchased offset credits with NIHT Topaiyo REDD+.

Papua New Guinea loses an estimated 1.4 percent of its forested land each year.

We are proud to support the communities of New Ireland & East New Britain in Papua New Guinea to protect forests and enrich local lives.

NIHT Topaiyo REDD+ is an initiative which ends deforestation from unsustainable logging practices in the island province of New Ireland, and works to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect Papua New Guinea’s rich and increasingly threatened biodiversity.

The project contributes to better sanitation, clean energy, educational opportunities and employment for locals of New Ireland, with Landowners receiving 56% of profits from the project’s revenue.

Impacts of NIHT Topaiyo REDD+ on the environment & local community.

We chose this initiative due to its proximity to Australia and its focus on working with indigenous landholders, which aligns closely with our own internal focus on reconciliation. The project had been highly vetted by independent review and was recommended to us as having high levels of direct impact.

The first three years of the project has resulted in 330,000 hectares of saved rainforest. Projected emissions reductions over a planned 30-year lifecycle are sitting at 60 million tonnes of CO2.

Becoming a carbon neutral organisation was a key goal for us in 2021. Receiving this certification to finish out the year is something we’re incredibly proud of.

RELATEDThe Knight appoints Training & Sustainability Manager >

As an organisation that represents over 22,000 homeowners, and close to 400 Owners Corporations – each with their own carbon footprint – our mission when we set out on this journey was to lead by example, and inspire action across our network.

We hope to be the first of many Owners Corporation Managers to reach this milestone, and to continue to push for more accessible and affordable sustainability outcomes for Owners Corporations across the country.

Thank you for being a part of our Climate Active journey and supporting climate leadership.
